Looking for an interesting watch on TV ...As the wild ride of the 1960’s came to a close, Eva Hesse, a 34 year-old German-born American artist was cresting the wave of a swiftly rising career. One of the few women recognized as central to the New York art scene, she had over 20 group shows scheduled for 1970 in addition to being chosen for a cover article in ArtForum Magazine. Her work was finally receiving both the critical and commercial attention it deserved. When she died in May, 1970 from a brain tumor, the life of one of that decades’ most passionate and brilliant artists was tragically cut short. Eva Hesse deepens the understanding of this extraordinary artist, not only in terms of her ground-breaking work, but also the life that provided the fertile soil for her achievements. With dozens of new interviews, high quality footage of Hesse’s artwork and a wealth of newly discovered archival imagery, the documentary not only traces Eva’s path but engages in a lively investigation into the creative community of 1960’s New York and Germany. Directed and produced by Marcie Begleiter. (Taken from PBS website).
What is an American Home? Each month we will feature a different artist/student. This month we are featuring Sandy Taffin, a longtime student here at Around the Corner. Her recently completed painting (pictured below, left) is titled Historic House in Trumbull, CT. What is an American home? ‘Christina’s World’ by Andrew Wyeth (pictured below, right) captures our collective imagination because it asks this universal question (among other things). The seemingly decrepit barn in Christina’s World is really a home. Sandy Taffin’s Historic House in Trumbull, CT echoes this. Both paintings are homages to home and history. We don’t have to go to the Olson’s house in Maine or a Midwest farm to experience this idea of a home. We have it in our New Jersey suburbs. All we have to do is look. (Written by: Miriam Solondz).
During art camp, we always make sure to create many drawings and paintings that remind us of the summertime! In Morganville, Eva Marie and her students created these amazing lighthouse pencil drawings to get a jump on the season! Students all followed along step-by-step to render this drawing with every little detail!
As the year is coming to a close, we are preparing for a summer full of fun classes for all ages and weekly art camps at both our Freehold and Morganville Locations! We would like to take this time to thank all of our talented students for their participation in our classes this year, as well as at our annual art show! First, they drew on a flat piece of canvas. Next, everyone painted their pictures with step-by-step instructions from Mark! After creating their paintings, Eva Marie sewed fabric on the backs of the pillows for the students. When they got back their pillows, kids got to stuff them & finish up by sewing them shut!! What a unique art project and a perfect way to decorate your home! Usually once a year Mark creates these pillows with his classes, and the kids have such a fun time doing so!
Our new class session is beginning soon... click here to learn more about our FREEHOLD classes. Remember, ART CAMP is just around the corner... in Freehold & Morganville! Fun Foxes from Multi-Media with Mark & help from EdMr. Ed joined Multi-Media Art as a guest instructor a few weeks ago to teach students how to sculpt these cool foxes! They just look so cool! Clay is a three week process. First, you must sculpt with the wet clay. Then, we wait for them to totally dry and fire them in our kiln. After the first firing, students paint their sculptures with ceramic glaze. Finally, the foxes are fired again in the kiln for the students to bring home! Tulips Plaques from Multi-Media with MarkIn a different Multi-Media class, students created these beautiful spring floral ceramic projects. They are tied with a ribbon and will look beautiful hanging on the wall! Sweet Sailboats from Kid's Art with Eva Marie A few weeks ago we began this sailboat project, and finally the kid's were able to take theirs home! They will be perfect to decorate for the summer.
