From Photograph to Painting

Each month we will feature a different artist/student. This month we are featuring Joyce Wasserman's and her original painting titled Portland Head Light (pictured below, left).

While traveling on vacation to Fort Williams Park, Maine, Joyce photographed this lighthouse and translated it into a painting at her art class. Seen below is her photograph and painting. Can you spot the difference?! We can compare this work to Edward Hopper’s The Lighthouse at Two Lights (pictured below, right). He travelled throughout Maine and used his paintings to document the manmade landscape seen along the coast in particular. Both Joyce and Hopper’s works draw attention to the beauty that can be found in architecture built merely as a necessity, to warn boats of the shore.
